How to get help
To receive food assistance – call the food bank office at (613) 544-4534 during the following days and times:
Monday to Friday – 8:30 to noon and from 1:00 to 4:30 pm
We are closed evenings, weekends and holidays.
No referrals are necessary – service users are required to call to arrange a time for an intake interview. The half hour intakes are scheduled for the morning hours only and once completed the service user will leave with an order of groceries.
The intake is necessary to compile the information needed to determine how many times a year each person or family can access the food bank and give the service user some general information on how the food bank system works. Once the basic information has been collected and a file created for the individual or family, a simple telephone call each month is all that is needed to order groceries in the future.
Occasionally we may request updates to your basic information just to keep your file up to date and see if your situation has changed. For example if your rent has increased you may be eligible for additional food support.
What’s in a food hamper?
The food bank offers three different food hampers to accommodate varying family sizes. The food they contain is predetermined and will be the same each time.
- Single: for a single person
- Small: for two persons
- Large: for families of three persons or more
Hampers contain 3 to 5 days worth of non-perishable food. Fresh milk and eggs and other donated produce, bread and desserts will be available each day for the service user to choose from.
Baby supplies, food and formula are also available and should be requested at the time of the intake interview or after the birth of a new baby.
Quite often we have pet food available from one of the larger grocery chains. Service users needing pet food are requested to inquire at the time of grocery pickup if they need dog or cat food.
